Thomas Weil has had an interest in the graphic quality of maps ever since, as a young boy, he watched his uncle hand painting maps when. As a Boy Scout and later a Marine, Tom utilized topographic maps for land navigation. This increased his awareness of graphic representation of earth surfaces which was enhanced by the many aircraft flights that were a part of his military experience. His fascination heightened with the publication of photographs from spacecrafts and satellites of the earth’s surface with ever changing weather patterns. Upon leaving active duty Tom attended and graduated from Ventura College where he studied photography, drawing and color theory. He went on to attend and graduate from the Columbus College of Art and Design where his studies in painting, photography, printmaking and art history deepened. After taking Master level courses in color theory and painting at the Academy of Art University a renewed interest in color and design emerged. This interest in map and surface design coupled with color theory concepts is what inspired the current series of paintings. He has recently returned to painting after a 20 year absence due to working as a digital artist in the graphic arts industry.

Tom's professional career began as a photo-retoucher, layout and paste-up artist with a retail in-house advertising in a national department store. Art school skills in painting, photography and printmaking were excellent foundations for his emerging career. As time progressed so did industry technology and digital software replaced traditional tools. There were no schools teaching software at the time, on the job learning was the order of the day. Working as a Pre-Press Desktop Publisher in the printing industry meant that every variation of graphic arts computer application needed to be mastered. Understanding traditional art and darkroom tools where extremely beneficial when shifting to digital tools.

Upon leaving the industry to begin teaching Thomas found the opportunity to share his well rounded knowledge and skill to emerging artists and graphic designers. Working at a start-up school gave him the opportunity to develop curriculum and fine tune assignment projects and evaluation. Tom also resumed exhibiting his photography, painting and prints, first at the Columbus Library in Ohio  and more recently in Orlando, Florida at the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orlando City Arts Factory gallery, and in college faculty/student shows. Tom is currently teaching graphics at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.
